45.) May Pen, April 1, 1894, Preview of the Jaguars

Tomorrow is Opening Day. Another glorious year of Ballplaying is ahead of us. Here's a look on the May Pen Jaguars team:

Catcher:
Tim Broadman, 35, career .280/.389/.421, excellent fielder, switch hitter
Claude D Uchek, 23, career .295/.364/.426, only adequate catcher, some say, Left-handed

1st baseman:
Jesse Lovely, 34,  tall (6-8), only medium power, ex-Red

2nd baseman
John O'Neill, 27, Switch hitter, 15-20 HR guy, average defender

3rd baseman
Vaughn Mansour, 34, Switch hitter, Can't hit lefties: .209/.299/.385, vs rightt: .264/.346/.403, defense suspect
Bill Hagans, 32, Lefty, also suspect to LHP, average fielder, good eye, two 100 BB seasons

Shortstop:
Peter Davis, 29, Switchhitter, career .303/.401/.414 hitter, good defense

Leftfield
John Hill, 28, righthander, .270-.280 hitter with 15-20 HR power

Centerfield
Woody Mulvaney, 26, lifetime .300 hitter without power, injury-prone, speedy

Rightfield
Gary Dionne, 32, two-time Allstar, career .324 hitter, poor power though

the Bench
Joe Popp, of, 31, only 87 senior-at bats, .250/.319/.464 hitter in juniors, good fielder
Danny Sterling,, 2b, 30 year old rookie, unremarkable junior career
Ben Cole, of, .294/.365/.500 career line in backup roles
John Connor, 29, 1b,  career .278/.310/.418, will have trouble clinging to a roster spot

Starting Roration

Edwin Eads, 26, 16-game winner in 1892, had 68 BB in 73 IP in St Andrew in 1893

Michael Stout, 22, 13-13 in 1893, four excellent pitches, but also control problems

Lou Ellis, 22, 10-12 in rookie season 93

Rick Lee, 24, 12-5, 1.59 ERA in Juniors in 93 and 1.83 in 20 IP in seniors

Mark Hall, 30,  5.03 ERA in 150 innins for the Reds and the Jaguars

All 5 starting pitchers are righthanders.

Closer:
Monty Wallace, 26, RHP, two-time all-star, 5.06 H/9,  3,31 BB/9,  10.31 K/9

Other relievers:
Cole O'Connor, 34, RHP, career BA against .219

Justin Roof, 34, RHP, Sinker/Slider guy, dependable, not spectacular

Jim Malcolm, 37, RHP, nearly 9 K per 9IP

Billy Sprouse, 30, RHP, reliable middle inning/ long relief guy

Kevin Brammer, 37, RHP, goes as far as his strange slider/change up mix carries him

Ron Baker, 39, LHP, sole lefty in bullpen, spot where Jags need an upgrade
